Blackburn Rovers Ladies beat league leaders Middlesbrough 4-0

Rovers Ladies moved up to third in the FA Women’s Premier League table with a convincing 4-0 victory over league leaders Middlesbrough.

It was another impressive display from Gemma Donnelly’s side, who put six past Derby County at the weekend.

Rovers still have six games in hand over the leaders, with an 11-point gap to make up, with the reverse fixture yet to play.

Donnelly’s side started strongly and took a deserved lead after quarter of an hour when Natasha Flint smashed home a volley home from close range.

Rovers would control the contest from then on, but it wasn’t until the second half that they would put the visitors to the sword, beginning with a wonderfully crafted Lynda Shepherd goal on 49 minutes, as she bent the ball beautifully into the bottom corner.

Just seven minutes later and Rovers made it 3-0 when pressure high up the pitch forced a turnover and Saffron Jordan twisted and turned before slotting the ball past the Boro keeper.

Several chances came and went, before the lively Lagan Makin rounded off the scoring with a powerful effort after cutting in from the left.

Rovers will continue the defence of their league title when they take on Leicester City on Sunday.

ROVERS: Hill, Pearson, Cook, McDonald, Taylor (Clarkson 85), Shepherd (Gerrard 88), Fenton, Holbrook (Walsh 78), Flint, Makin, Jordan.
