Blackburn Rovers Ladies retain league title and complete the treble!!!

Rovers Ladies capped off an incredible few weeks by retaining the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division title following a 4-1 win away to Nottingham Forest.

Gemma Donnelly’s side had already lifted the Premier League Cup and Lancashire Cup over the past fortnight and they completed a terrific treble after battling back from a goal down at the break to secure the spoils.

Rovers started the game well, with Natasha Flint testing the Forest keeper early on. However, it was the hosts who opened the scoring on 11 minutes when Hazzana Parnell found herself unmarked and she fired home from close range.

Despite waves of Rovers pressure throughout the first half, it would be after the interval when clear-cut chances were created.

Straight from the restart, Rovers were on the ascendancy and they thought they had equalised on 47 minutes when Saffron Jordan’s initial effort was tipped onto the bar and she then pounced on the rebound, but the officials ruled that the ball hadn’t crossed the line.

However, there was no uncertainty moments later, as Lagan Makin levelled with a fierce strike through a crowd of bodies from a set piece.

Rovers remained patient before taking the lead on 71 minutes when the Forest keeper made a meal of Jordan’s cross, allowing Jess Holbrook to score.

Makin then turned provider, setting up Flint, who bent the ball around the defender and into the back of the net for Rovers’ third.

And an own goal just moments later sealed the victory and consequently clinched the league title for the second season running, with results elsewhere going in Rovers’ favour.

Rovers now have three league games remaining – starting with the visit of Stoke City to Ewood Park on Tuesday night (kick-off 7.45pm) – before they take on Southern Division champions Charlton Athletic in the National Play-off at Bramall Lane on Sunday May 27th.

ROVERS: Hill, Jukes, Taylor, Cook, McDonald (Clarkson 89), Fenton, Holbrook, Shepherd (Walsh 88), Jordan (Montgomery 87), Flint, Makin.
