Blackburn Rovers Ladies take top spot!

Rovers Ladies rose to top of the Premier League Northern Division after coming from behind to beat title rivals Leicester City 3-2.

Leicester twice took the lead, but goals from Natasha Flint (two) and Saffron Jordan ensured three priceless points would be coming back to Blackburn.

It was a vital victory for Rovers in their bid to retain the league title and it keeps them on course for a historic treble, having already defeated Leicester in the FA Women’s Premier League Cup final last weekend.

Rovers made the worst possible start, as Rosie Axten opened the scoring for the Foxes inside two minutes after good work from Leigh Dugmore in the box.

Gemma Donnelly’s side grew into the game and deservedly hit back when Lagin Makin played in Flint, who calmly levelled the scores midway through the half.

With the half-time interval looming and Leicester rattling the bar moments earlier, Dugmore rose highest from a corner to head the Foxes in front at the break.

The second half would prove to be a different story, as Rovers upped the tempo and forced Leicester into mistakes in their own half.

Despite Lynda Shepherd seeing a shot cleared off the line, Jess Holbrook blazing over from close range and Ellie Cook hitting the crossbar, Rovers were not to be denied.

On 67 minutes, Rovers’ pressure was eventually rewarded when Jordan acrobatically hooked the ball past the Leicester keeper after a goal-mouth scramble.

With Rovers growing in confidence, there looked to be only one winner and that would prove to be the case when Flint found space on the corner of the 18-yard box, before bending the ball into the top corner to secure the win.

The result moves Rovers two points clear of second-place Middlesbrough, with two games in hand and just four matches remaining.

ROVERS: Hill, Taylor, Pearson (Makin 10 (Montgomery 84)), McDonald, Cook, Shepherd, Fenton, Holbrook, Jukes, Flint, Jordan.
