Rovers Ladies were knocked out of the FA Women’s Cup

Rovers Ladies were knocked out of the FA Women’s Cup at the fourth round stage after losing 3-2 to Charlton Athletic after extra-time, despite twice battling back in normal time.

It was a case of history repeating itself, as the two teams last met in the FA Women’s Premier League Cup last season, with the Addicks again coming out on top in extra-time.

Natasha Flint twice levelled for Rovers in 90 minutes, but a swift counter-attack from Charlton saw the game decided by Georgia Griffin in the 100th minute.

The first half saw few chances for either side, as Rovers striker Saffron Jordan had a header well saved at one end, before Kit Graham was denied by Danielle Hill at the other.

After the break, the game opened up, and a long ball into the box was spilled by Hill and the ball bounced off the unfortunate Alex Taylor into the back of the Rovers net.

Rovers responded well and equalised on 55 minutes when Natasha Fenton’s initial shot was blocked, but Flint drilled home the follow-up from just inside the area.

Jess Holbrook saw a screamer from distance go just wide, before Jordan couldn’t quite connect with a Flint cross, as Rovers piled on the pressure.

However, seconds later, the hosts were punished as a long ball forward wasn’t dealt with and Charlotte Gurr spotted Hill off her line to restore Charlton’s lead.

Rovers refused to give up and levelled again on 81 minutes when Flint fired a low free-kick under the wall and into the bottom corner.

Two minutes later, Flint showed her class once again as a clever turn created space for a shot, but after rocketing the ball past the keeper, she could only see it crash back off the crossbar.

Seconds before the 90, Flint again almost won it for Rovers, but her header sailed over after finding space at the back post.

In extra-time, substitute Kaylea Cunliffe went close with a header and Flint had a smart shot saved, before Jess Holbrook drilled hard and low across goal but just wide of the far post.

And, in the 100th minute, Rovers were punished for their missed chances, as Charlton broke at pace, before Graham teed up Griffin for a tap in at the back post.

ROVERS: Hill, Taylor, Pearson, Cook (Montgomery 112), McDonald, Shepherd, Holbrook, Fenton, Makin (Cunliffe 82), Jordan, Flint.
