Rovers Ladies win League Cup!

Rovers Ladies came from behind to beat Leicester City 3-1 and lift the FA Women’s Premier League Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Gemma Donnelly’s side found themselves a goal down early on, before captain Lynda Shepherd equalised from the spot before half-time.

Ellie Cook headed home the second, before Saffron Jordan wrapped up the win late on, as Rovers completed a remarkable comeback to lift the League Cup on their maiden appearance in the final.

Rovers made a slow start and were duly punished on 14 minutes when a low cross wasn’t dealt with and Sophie Domingo – who scored twice in Leicester’s 2-1 league victory over Rovers earlier this month – smashed home off the post to fire the Foxes ahead.

Eager to avoid a repeat result, Rovers responded well and went close to an equaliser when Alex Taylor rattled the crossbar.

Just past the half-hour mark, Jordan was adjudged to have been pushed in the back inside the box and Shepherd made no mistake from the spot.

The Rovers skipper, who has been in fine goalscoring form of late, thought she had given her side the lead when Kelsey Pearson’s shot hit the bar, but Shepherd was flagged for offside as she fired home the follow-up.

After the interval, Rovers kept up the momentum, controlled the contest and went in front on 74 minutes when Cook rose highest to head home Jess Holbrook’s corner.

Hannah Walsh almost grabbed a third, only to see her shot saved, but Jordan didn’t let Leicester off, as she twisted inside the box before firing home in the final minute to spark jubilant scenes of celebration.

The result keeps Rovers on course for an historic league and cup ‘treble’, as Donnelly’s side aim to retain the Northern Division title and Lancashire Cup over the coming weeks.
